Beyond the Scoreline: Zimbabwe Women’s Football Needs a Reset

By Kay-Dee · W! Football in Africa · October 2026 · LA28 Olympic Qualifiers: Zimbabwe 0-7 Malawi (aggregate 0-9)

First things first - congratulations to the Malawi Scorchers. A team boasting the Chawinga sisters, Kabzere and other talented players who have benefited from continuity, international exposure and deliberate investment in women’s football. Malawi are a powerhouse, and their performances reflect a team that has developed an identity, chemistry and an understanding of how they want to play.

Now, Zimbabwe.

We can change coaches every other year, recycle the same players and hope for different results, but without addressing what happens behind the scenes, we will keep going in circles. This is bigger than the technical bench or the 90 minutes we watch.

We have allegations of poor officiating in our domestic leagues, inadequate player development structures, limited scouting networks and no properly established national high-performance centre.
